A chilling incident unfolded in Columbus, Ohio, when a mother of four was arrested for allegedly setting fire to the apartment she shared with her children. The situation quickly escalated, with authorities discovering disturbing details about the mother’s behavior and intentions.
The Disturbing Incident
On May 2, 2026, emergency crews were called to the Wedgewood Apartment complex in Columbus’ Hollywood Hill neighborhood after reports of a fire. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found multiple people inside, including four minor children.
Once the fire was extinguished, investigators determined that it had been intentionally set. It was later revealed that the children’s mother, 30-year-old Hawa Hassan, was the one who started the fire.
Witnesses and Confession
A witness reported hearing Hassan threaten to “kill them all” before the fire was set. Investigators learned that she had used a lighter to start the blaze in one of the bedrooms. The witness confirmed hearing Hassan make the horrifying statement before the fire broke out.
According to authorities, Hassan later admitted to setting the fire when questioned by police.
Charges and Arrest
Hassan was arrested and charged with felony aggravated arson, as well as assault and domestic violence by assault. She is currently in custody at Franklin County Jail, being held without bond. Her next court appearance is set for early May.
Children Safe, Now in Protective Custody
The four children involved in the incident were safely removed from the apartment and placed under the care of Franklin County Children’s Services. Thankfully, they are now in a safe environment, far away from the terrifying ordeal.
The fire caused damage to one of the apartments, though it was primarily limited to the exterior of the building, with no other significant damage reported.
