A tragic incident occurred in Chicago on Saturday when one police officer was fatally shot and another critically wounded by a robbery suspect they were escorting inside a hospital.
Officers Shot While Escorting Suspect Inside Hospital
The shooting happened at Endeavor Health’s Swedish Hospital when the suspect, who was brought in for treatment, allegedly managed to obtain a firearm despite being screened with a metal detection wand.
The suspect was under police escort throughout the facility, but it remains unclear how the firearm was introduced into the hospital. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling confirmed the incident is still under investigation.
Suspect Flees and Is Taken into Custody
After the shooting, the suspect fled the hospital and reportedly entered a private home a few blocks away. Police and SWAT teams surrounded the house, and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. A “third weapon” was also recovered at the scene.
Officers’ Condition
The two officers were transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Tragically, one officer, aged 38 and with 10 years of service, was pronounced dead. The other officer, a 57-year-old with 21 years of service, remains in critical condition and is “fighting for his life,” according to Superintendent Snelling.
Hospital Under Lockdown
Swedish Hospital was placed under lockdown following the shooting. Endeavor Health, the parent company of the hospital, confirmed that while the hospital is closed for the ongoing investigation, patients and staff are safe.
Details of the Incident
The suspect had been initially taken into custody for a suspected robbery and was transported to the hospital for observation. Authorities have not publicly identified the officers involved or the suspect at this time.
Community Reaction
Superintendent Snelling expressed his grief over the loss of the officer, calling it a “senseless loss of life” and emphasizing the dangers officers face while protecting the city.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also called the shooting a “tragedy,” offering his condolences and expressing gratitude to Chicago police officers for their service.
