A tragic hit-and-run case in Louisiana has led to the arrest of a local man after a pedestrian lost his life. The incident has raised concerns about road safety and the responsibility of drivers in emergency situations.
Fatal Hit-and-Run in Carencro
Barrett Coleman, 42, has been arrested and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. He is facing a felony charge of hit and run following a deadly incident that happened on April 19, 2026.
The crash took place in Carencro, where police responded early in the morning to reports of a body found near the roadway.
Details of the Incident
According to the Carencro Police Department, officers arrived at the 3400 block of NW Evangeline Thruway around 8 a.m. They discovered a deceased man lying in the grass median, covered with a blue tarp.
Investigators later found that the victim had been walking along the frontage road. Due to weather conditions, he was reportedly wrapped in a tarp when he was struck by a vehicle traveling in the same direction.
Driver’s Actions After the Crash
Police say the driver, believed to be Coleman, returned to the scene after the crash but did not stop to help the victim. Instead of calling for emergency assistance or providing aid, he left the area.
Authorities also revealed that he came back a second time but again failed to take any action before leaving.
Arrest and Investigation
With help from the Real Time Crime Center and the Lafayette Police Department, officers were able to track down the vehicle involved. Coleman was later located in Lafayette and taken into custody.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to gather more details about the case.
