A Louisiana man was arrested after deputies discovered a large amount of illegal drugs during a traffic stop on Interstate 10 in Lafayette Parish. Authorities say the investigation began after deputies noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle during the stop, which led to a search and the seizure of nearly 9 pounds of narcotics.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old David Butler of Addis, now faces multiple serious drug charges connected to the large quantity of substances allegedly found inside the vehicle.
Traffic Stop Led to Major Drug Discovery
According to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped Butler while he was driving on Interstate 10 in Lafayette Parish.
During the stop, investigators reportedly detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Authorities said the smell provided probable cause for deputies to conduct a search of the vehicle.
During that search, deputies claim they uncovered a significant amount of illegal narcotics and prescription-related substances.
Authorities Seized Multiple Drugs
Officials reported recovering several different types of drugs from inside the vehicle.
According to investigators, deputies seized:
- 1,995 grams of crystal methamphetamine
- 2,155 grams of methamphetamine tablets
- 60 Tapentadol tablets
- 11 Xanax tablets
- 2.5 grams of marijuana
- 24 bottles of Promethazine
Authorities said the total amount of narcotics recovered weighed nearly 9 pounds.
David Butler Faces Multiple Charges
Following the discovery, Butler was arrested and charged with several drug-related offenses.
According to officials, the charges include possession with intent to distribute Schedule II controlled substances connected to the crystal methamphetamine, methamphetamine tablets, and Tapentadol tablets.
He also faces charges involving possession of Xanax, marijuana, and Promethazine without a prescription.
Law enforcement officials have not publicly released additional details about where the drugs may have originated or whether investigators suspect broader trafficking activity.
Investigation Still Ongoing
The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the investigation remains active.
Authorities often continue reviewing evidence in major narcotics cases to determine whether additional suspects, suppliers, or criminal connections may be involved.
Interstate highways such as I-10 are commonly monitored by law enforcement agencies because they are frequently used for transporting illegal drugs across state lines.
Drug Seizures Continue Across Louisiana
Large drug seizures like this one continue to be a major focus for law enforcement agencies across Louisiana and other states. Officials often warn that methamphetamine and illegally distributed prescription medications remain serious public safety concerns because of their connection to addiction, overdoses, and organized trafficking operations.
Authorities also continue encouraging residents to report suspicious activity involving narcotics and illegal drug distribution in their communities.
