The incident reportedly took place near the village of Debel, where an image showed an Israeli soldier striking a statue of Jesus with a sledgehammer.
Local residents said the statue was part of a crucifix located outside a family home. Debel is one of the few villages in the area where some residents have remained despite ongoing tensions.
Israel Responds to the Incident
Benjamin Netanyahu said he was “stunned and saddened” by the act. Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also issued an apology, saying the country regrets the incident and understands that it hurt Christian communities.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that the image is genuine and stated that the soldier’s behaviour does not reflect its values. The military said it would take appropriate action and is working with the local Christian community to restore the damaged statue.

Father Fadi Flaifel, a church leader in the area, strongly condemned the act. He said the destruction of the cross, a sacred symbol for Christians, is unacceptable and goes against basic human rights and respect for religion.
