The Upper Darby Police Department confirmed that a 14-year-old boy has been charged as an adult with third-degree murder following the death of a 14-year-old girl.
The shooting happened on Thursday, May 14, at a home located on the 100 block of Springton Road in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania.
Police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a person suffering from a gunshot wound inside the residence.
When officers arrived, they found the teenage victim suffering from a single gunshot wound. She was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but later died from her injuries.
Police Say Group of Friends Were Handling Gun
According to investigators, four teenagers — two boys and two girls — were hanging out together inside the home before the shooting happened.
Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt said the group allegedly found a handgun inside the house and began handling it while inside an upstairs bedroom.
Authorities believe the firearm accidentally discharged during that time.
Police said a single bullet struck the victim in the head.
