The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that the severe storm damage reported in the area between Bunkie and Plaucheville on May 8 was caused by a macroburst, not a tornado. The storm brought straight-line winds that were estimated to range from 60 to 90 mph.
Damage Report and Affected Areas
The powerful winds caused significant damage across the region, with approximately 20 buildings being affected. In addition to the building damage, trees and power lines were knocked down, causing widespread disruptions.
What is a Macroburst?
The NWS describes a macroburst as a large downburst with an outflow diameter of 4 km or greater. These events are characterized by damaging winds that persist for 2 to 5 minutes, creating a forceful impact on the area.
