A disturbing case from Illinois has shocked many people after police accused a woman of hiding her elderly neighbour’s death for nearly three years. Authorities say the woman, who reportedly acted as the elderly victim’s caregiver, continued managing the victim’s finances and maintaining the home while keeping the death secret.
Investigators later discovered the body in an advanced state of decomposition after concerned family members requested a welfare check.
The unusual and tragic case has raised serious questions about elder care, financial exploitation, and neglect.
Illinois Woman Accused of Hiding Elderly Neighbour’s Death
Illinois resident Gena English-Wheat, 59, has been charged with concealment of a death after police allegedly discovered the body of her 86-year-old neighbour, Lillie Prindle, inside her home in Springfield.
According to police documents, English-Wheat was both Prindle’s caregiver and next-door neighbour. Investigators say the case began after family members became worried because they could no longer contact the elderly woman in November 2025.
Concerned relatives eventually requested a welfare check from the Springfield Police Department.
Police Found Body Covered With Blankets
When officers entered Prindle’s home on November 6, 2025, they reportedly found her body sitting in a chair inside the living room. According to investigators, the body was covered with blankets.
Police later described the remains as “mummified” and surrounded by insect husks. The local coroner reportedly stated that the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition.
Authorities believe Prindle may have been dead for at least a year before her body was discovered.
As investigators searched the home, they noticed signs suggesting very little inside the house had changed since 2022. Police reportedly found expired food, old household items, and a calendar that had not been updated for several years.
Neighbours Said They Had Not Seen Elderly Woman for Long Time
During the investigation, police interviewed neighbours familiar with both women. Several people reportedly told investigators they had not seen Lillie Prindle for a very long time.
According to reports, some neighbours also said they had not recently seen English-Wheat visiting Prindle’s home either.
One witness allegedly told police that just weeks before the body was discovered, English-Wheat claimed Prindle was staying with a niece.
Investigators later determined that statement may not have been true.
Police Investigated Bank Accounts and ATM Withdrawals
As detectives continued looking into the case, they reportedly discovered that several of Prindle’s financial accounts remained active even after her suspected death.
According to authorities, Social Security payments and state pension deposits were still being sent into the elderly woman’s bank account every month.
Police also noticed repeated ATM withdrawals from those accounts.
Investigators later obtained surveillance footage from ATM machines and allegedly identified English-Wheat making multiple withdrawals during October 2025. Authorities said she also used the same debit card connected to payments for Prindle’s utility bills.
Woman Allegedly Admitted Finding Body in 2022
Police eventually questioned English-Wheat after gathering evidence related to the financial transactions.
According to the probable cause statement, she allegedly admitted to discovering Prindle dead in her living room chair back in August 2022. Investigators claim she told police she never informed anyone because she “did not want anyone to know.”
Authorities also stated that English-Wheat admitted maintaining the elderly woman’s home, paying utility bills, mowing the lawn, and making bank withdrawals in order to make it appear as though Prindle was still alive.
Reports further claim that investigators believe approximately $130,000 may have been taken from Prindle’s accounts over time. However, as of now, English-Wheat has not officially been charged with theft related to the money.
Court Issues Arrest Warrant After Missed Appearances
English-Wheat was arrested on February 22 and charged with concealment of a death. She was later granted pretrial release from the Sangamon County Jail.
However, local reports state that she failed to appear in court multiple times after her release, including during a recent scheduled hearing.
As a result, authorities have now issued a warrant for her arrest. Officials have not yet announced her next court date.
