A 22-year-old New York woman has been charged with murder after authorities alleged that she fatally stabbed a longtime friend during a late-night gathering at his family home. The incident, which took place in Massapequa, has left a family mourning the loss of their son while investigators continue to examine what led to the deadly confrontation.
New York Woman Charged With Murder
Kristin Sculley, 22, appeared in a Nassau County court on Tuesday after being charged with second-degree murder in the death of 28-year-old Robert Carragher.
According to prosecutors, Sculley pleaded not guilty during her arraignment. The charge stems from an incident that occurred during the early hours of June 1 after the pair had spent several hours together.
Authorities say the two had known each other for years and were considered friends before the tragic events unfolded.
Friends Spent the Evening Together
Investigators said Carragher and Sculley were together on the night of May 31 at the Massapequa home where Carragher lived with his parents.
According to police, the pair were in Carragher’s basement bedroom and had spent much of the evening together before the situation allegedly turned violent after midnight.
Officials have not publicly released information indicating that there had been any previous conflict between the two friends.
The exact events leading up to the fatal encounter remain under investigation.
Prosecutors Describe Fatal Stabbing
According to authorities, Sculley allegedly used a knife she had brought with her to the residence.
Prosecutors claim she stabbed Carragher in the neck, causing a severe injury that punctured an artery. Police said Carragher was lying in bed at the time of the alleged attack.
Despite his injuries, investigators said he managed to get out of bed and rush upstairs seeking help from his parents.
The sudden and violent nature of the incident shocked both investigators and family members.
Victim Sought Help From His Parents
According to police, Carragher ran upstairs screaming for his mother after suffering the wound.
He reportedly collapsed in the kitchen of the family home, where his parents desperately tried to stop the bleeding while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.
Authorities said Carragher’s injuries were catastrophic. Despite the efforts of his parents and emergency personnel, he could not be saved.
Police responded to the home at approximately 1:30 a.m., and a paramedic later pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators described the incident as a heartbreaking loss for the family.
Police Arrested Sculley Inside the Home
After arriving at the residence, officers conducted a search of the property.
Authorities said Sculley was found hiding inside the Carragher family home and was taken into custody without further incident.
During the investigation, police recovered a pocketknife believed to be the weapon used in the stabbing. Investigators stated that the knife allegedly belonged to Sculley.
The recovered evidence has become a key part of the homicide investigation.
Motive Remains Unclear
At this stage, investigators have not publicly disclosed a motive for the alleged attack.
However, Sculley’s defence attorney has suggested that self-defence cannot be ruled out and indicated that additional facts may emerge as the case proceeds through the court system.
Because the criminal case remains active, authorities have released only limited information regarding what occurred immediately before the stabbing.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to be examined further during future court proceedings.
Court Proceedings Continue
Following her arraignment, Sculley was formally charged with second-degree murder and entered a not-guilty plea.
The case is expected to move through the Nassau County court system over the coming months as prosecutors and defence attorneys present evidence and arguments.
Court records indicate that Sculley is scheduled to appear in court again on June 4.
Investigators continue to review evidence while seeking to establish a clearer picture of the events that led to Carragher’s death.
