A Las Vegas family that was celebrating the joy of welcoming a new baby suddenly faced unimaginable heartbreak after a horrific DUI crash changed their lives forever. What started as a happy day filled with excitement quickly turned into tragedy after a suspected drunk driver crashed into their vehicle, leaving multiple family members seriously injured and causing the death of their unborn baby boy.
Now, months later, the family is finally seeing justice after the driver responsible was sentenced to decades in prison. Even while continuing to heal physically and emotionally, the family says the pain of their loss remains impossible to forget.
Family’s Joy Turned Into Tragedy After Ultrasound Appointment
Rebekah Dauz, her husband Chester, their son Isaiah, and their daughter were returning home after attending a special 4D ultrasound appointment where they got to see images of their unborn baby boy.
According to family members, the moment was filled with happiness and excitement. Loved ones gathered together to celebrate as they watched the unborn baby smile, move around, and suck his thumb during the ultrasound.
The family never imagined that only a short time later, their lives would completely change.
At around 2:20 p.m. on September 6, 2025, a serious four-vehicle crash happened in Las Vegas after a Jeep reportedly entered an intersection against a red light.
Police later identified the Jeep driver as Maximiliano Chavez.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, several people inside a Subaru suffered severe injuries during the violent collision and were rushed to a nearby trauma hospital for emergency treatment.
Unborn Baby Boy Did Not Survive
Authorities said Rebekah Dauz, who was seven months pregnant at the time, required emergency surgery after the crash in an attempt to save her unborn child.
Doctors successfully delivered the baby boy, but despite all lifesaving efforts, he sadly did not survive.
The heartbreaking loss deeply affected the entire family, who had just spent the day celebrating the upcoming arrival of their son.
Rebekah and her young son Isaiah both suffered life-threatening injuries and were admitted to the intensive care unit following the crash.
According to updates shared through a GoFundMe page created by Rebekah’s sister-in-law, the mother and son were separated while recovering from their injuries in the hospital.
One emotional update described a touching moment when hospital staff reunited Rebekah and Isaiah during recovery. Family members shared that Isaiah spoke his first words since the accident after seeing his mother, quietly saying “Mom.”
Later, he softly told her, “I love you too,” creating an emotional moment for everyone in the room.
Driver Arrested for DUI After Crash
Police said Maximiliano Chavez showed signs of impairment at the scene and was arrested shortly after the collision.
He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on DUI-related charges.
In February 2026, Chavez pleaded guilty to two counts of driving under the influence causing substantial bodily harm and one count of reckless driving.
Originally, prosecutors charged him with seven felony offences, including charges connected to the death of the unborn baby. However, some charges were dropped as part of a plea agreement.
Authorities also revealed that Chavez had previous DUI offences, which increased the seriousness of the case.
Judge Sentenced Driver to Decades in Prison
During sentencing on May 7, 2026, District Judge Tara Newberry ordered Chavez to serve between 16 and 40 years in prison.
According to reports, Chavez could have faced an even longer sentence if the plea agreement had not been reached.
During the emotional court hearing, Rebekah Dauz spoke about the physical and emotional trauma she continues to experience after the crash.
She told the court that every scar on her body reminds her of the terrible day she lost her unborn son. She also shared that she still suffers nightmares connected to the ultrasound appointment that once brought her so much happiness.
Her husband Chester asked the judge to impose the maximum possible punishment for the driver responsible.
Young Son Offers Emotional Forgiveness
One of the most emotional moments during the sentencing came when 9-year-old Isaiah addressed the courtroom.
Although he is still recovering from his injuries, Isaiah showed remarkable strength and compassion while speaking directly about Chavez.
The young boy said he continues healing slowly but believes things will improve with time. He also offered forgiveness to Chavez and said he would pray for him.
His emotional statement touched many people following the hearing and highlighted the family’s courage during an incredibly painful time.
