A shocking double murder case in Texas has ended with a life prison sentence for the man responsible. Prosecutors said the attack was sudden and brutal, leaving two members of the same family dead and another victim seriously injured.

The violent incident happened at a home in Arlington, Texas, and authorities say the suspect deliberately forced his way inside before opening fire.

Texas Man Sentenced to Life for Double Murder in Arlington Shooting

A Texas jury has found 37-year-old Reid Rothenberg guilty of capital murder in the killings of Matthew Stuart, 41, and George Nitsche, 84.

According to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office, Rothenberg was automatically sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after the jury delivered its verdict.

Prosecutors said the deadly attack happened on the night of April 10, 2022, inside a home in Arlington.

Gunman Kicked In Door and Opened Fire

Authorities said the victims were inside a home on Ivy Hill Drive when the attack began.

At the time, Matthew Stuart, his 67-year-old mother, and George Nitsche were inside the house. Nitsche, who was the ex-husband of Stuart’s mother, was lying on a couch in the back of the home.

According to prosecutors, Rothenberg suddenly kicked in the front door and began firing his weapon.

Nitsche was shot and killed inside the house before he even had a chance to react.

During the trial, Assistant District Attorney Matt Rivers told jurors that the elderly victim never saw the attack coming.

Suspect Chased Victims Outside

After the initial shooting, prosecutors said Rothenberg chased Matthew Stuart and his mother outside the home.

As they ran toward the front yard, the suspect continued firing multiple shots.

Police said Stuart and his mother were both hit during the attack.

Officers from the Arlington Police Department arrived shortly after midnight on April 11, 2022.

When officers reached the scene:

  • George Nitsche had already died inside the home
  • Matthew Stuart was critically injured
  • Stuart’s mother was also wounded but alive

Both Stuart and his mother were taken to a hospital, but Stuart later died from his injuries.

Police Arrested Suspect After Investigation

Investigators spent weeks gathering evidence before identifying Rothenberg as the suspect.

About two months after the shooting, police announced his arrest. Authorities said detectives were able to connect him to the crime after a detailed investigation.

According to police, evidence suggested that Rothenberg knew at least one of the victims, although the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Prosecutors Called Attack Brutal

During the trial, Assistant District Attorney Tad Schmidt described the shooting as a deliberate and violent act.

He told the jury that the case involved more than just a killing and called it a brutal homicide carried out by someone who arrived with the intent to kill.

Based on the evidence presented, jurors convicted Rothenberg of capital murder, which carries an automatic life sentence without parole in this case.
