A resident of Gonzales is speaking out about a serious drainage problem that has been troubling her for years. The issue has not only caused inconvenience but has also raised health concerns, as water often collects in her yard and stays there for long periods after rainfall.
Ongoing Drainage Problem in Gonzales
Rhonda Gaughan, who lives in Gonzales in Ascension Parish, shared her concerns with a local news team, saying that the situation has only worsened over time. According to her, the parish’s solution has been to keep digging the ditch in front of her house deeper. However, she believes this approach is not solving the real issue.
She explained in simple terms that water cannot flow uphill, and that is exactly what she feels is being expected in her case.
How the Problem Started
Gaughan said the trouble began a few years ago when a ditch across the street from her home was closed off. Along with that, the natural direction of water flow was changed. Since then, water has not been draining properly from her property.
As a result, dirty water, including what she describes as sewer water, often collects in her yard. She says this is not only unpleasant but also risky for health and safety.
Parish Response to the Issue
Officials from Ascension Parish have responded by saying they have been in regular contact with Gaughan. A team from the Department of Public Works (DPW) recently visited her property to check the situation.
According to a parish spokesperson, the area has already been dug and adjusted earlier, and they believe everything is at the correct level for proper drainage. Despite this, Gaughan disagrees and feels the current setup is not working as it should.
What Happens During Rainfall
Whenever it rains, Gaughan’s front yard fills with water. The drainage ditch also gets full and overflows into her yard. The water then stays there for some time before slowly draining and drying up.
There is also a culvert that brings water from a nearby cow pasture and passes it along her property. Further down the road, another culvert carries the water under the road again. Even with this setup, the drainage problem continues.
Limitations Faced by the Parish
The parish has stated that the drainage from Gaughan’s property flows onto a private lane. Because of this, they do not have the legal authority to make changes or carry out work in that area. This limitation has made it more difficult to fix the issue completely.
Unfinished Work Order Adds to Concern
Last year, Gaughan submitted a request to have her culvert replaced. While the current culvert still allows water to pass through, she believes a new one would improve drainage significantly. However, the work has not yet been completed, adding to her frustration.
