A reality TV personality has found herself in serious legal trouble in the United States, after being accused of organised retail theft along with her husband. The case has gained attention not only because of the allegations but also due to her claims about financial struggles and being in “survival mode.”
Who Is Involved in the Case
The accused is Melany Viljoen, also known as Mel, along with her husband Peet Viljoen. The couple had reportedly moved to the US in search of better opportunities.
Melany is known for her appearance on the show Real Housewives of Pretoria, which made the case even more high-profile.
What Police Are Alleging
According to authorities, the couple is accused of carrying out multiple thefts at a Publix store in Boca Raton, Florida.
Investigators claim that over a period of several months, the couple worked together in a planned way to steal items from the store. Reports state that they used a similar method each time and arrived and left in the same vehicle, a black Range Rover.
Police also said that:
The alleged thefts happened between September and December 2025, causing losses of over $3,500. By March 2026, the total losses had reportedly increased to more than $5,300.
Melany Viljoen’s Statement
During questioning, Melany told police that she alone was responsible for the thefts. She claimed her husband had no involvement in the incidents.
She also explained that she was struggling financially because she could not work due to visa restrictions after moving to the US. According to her, this situation pushed her into what she described as “survival mode.”
However, police said they showed her video evidence that allegedly included her husband stealing items alone in one instance. Despite this, she continued to take full responsibility.
Evidence Collected by Authorities
Investigators said they had gathered multiple pieces of evidence, including:
Photos and videos showing the couple inside the store. Surveillance footage of repeated visits and similar actions. Records linking their vehicle to the incidents.
Authorities claim that Mel confirmed both her and her husband’s identities in the footage.
Arrest and Charges
Both Melany and Peet Viljoen were arrested and taken to the Main Detention Centre in West Palm Beach.
They have been charged with organised retail theft, which is considered a serious felony offence. Each of them was given a bond of $10,000.
The case is still under investigation as police continue to examine the full extent of the alleged theft activities.
What Happens Next
As the legal process moves forward, the court will review the evidence and decide on the next steps. It is still unclear how the case will unfold or whether additional charges could be filed.
The situation has raised questions about financial pressure, legal responsibility, and how such cases are handled when multiple people are involved.
