Rapper Rob Base, one-half of the iconic hip-hop duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, has died at the age of 59 after a battle with cancer.

Tribute and Legacy

A statement posted on Base’s Instagram honored his life and career, saying, “Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world.

Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten.” The post added that Base was surrounded by family at the time of his passing and expressed gratitude for the music, memories, and moments he shared with fans.

Career Highlights

Born Robert Ginyard in May 1967, Rob Base became a household name through his collaborations with lifelong friend DJ E-Z Rock, whom he met in fifth grade while living in Harlem.

Their breakout single, “It Takes Two,” released in 1988 by Profile Records, became an underground rap sensation and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard U.S. Dance Club Songs chart. The Times described it as “the rage of the rap underground.”

Following the success of “It Takes Two,” the duo released singles including “Joy and Pain” and “Get On the Dance Floor.” Base also released his solo album, “The Incredible Base,” in 1989.

Advocate for Hip-Hop

Base was a passionate supporter of rap music and explained its intricacies to The Times in 1989. “People outside rap don’t understand it. There’s all sorts of subtle things — key things — happening over and above the beat in rap songs. The fans want new stuff all the time,” he said, highlighting his dedication to the genre and its evolution.

Personal Life

Base had two children, De’Jené Ginyard and Robert Ginyard Jr. His wife, April, passed away in 2013.
