New Orleans is preparing for a major maritime celebration as nearly 3,000 sailors and 12 large ships arrive in the city ahead of America’s 250th birthday celebrations.
From May 28 to June 1, visitors will have the chance to see historic tall ships and military vessels lined up along the Mississippi River. The ships will stretch from Poland Avenue Wharf in the Bywater area to the Crescent City Connection bridge.
Officials expect tens of thousands of people to attend the event.
New Orleans Chosen as One of Five Host Cities
New Orleans is the first of five cities selected to host the Sail 250 celebration. Other host cities include Norfolk, Baltimore, New York City, and Boston.
According to Mark Romig of New Orleans & Company, the city was honored to be selected because of its long history as an important port city.
Romig said it is the largest gathering of tall ships in New Orleans in decades.
Ships Coming From Around the World
The ships participating in the event are arriving from countries including Chile, Peru, Colombia, Sweden, the Netherlands, Argentina, and the United Kingdom.
The event will feature seven tall ships along with five military vessels.
One of the largest ships visiting New Orleans is arriving from Norfolk. The vessel is reportedly 844 feet long and weighs around 41,000 tons.
Another large ship from Mayport is more than 500 feet long.
Free Public Tours and Family Events
Public tours of the ships will be free and available daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. between May 28 and May 31. Organizers say schedules may vary depending on the vessel.
Several free community events are also planned during the celebration.
A fireworks show will take place Saturday night at 9 p.m., while a Seafood Cook-Off featuring sailors and local chefs is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Spanish Plaza.
Families can also attend the Family Fun Sports Day at Audubon Riverview Park, also known as The Fly.
The celebration will end Monday morning with a blessing of the ships at the Moon Walk and Goldring Woldenberg Riverfront Park.
Best Places to Watch the Ships
Officials say some of the best viewing locations include Crescent Park, Goldring Woldenberg Riverfront Park, Algiers Point Levee, Spanish Plaza, Riverwalk Outlets Mall, and The Westin Hotel.
Thousands of sailors are also expected to explore the city, visit restaurants, and participate in local celebrations during the event.
Drone Restrictions During the Event
Organizers have also announced a strict no-fly zone for drones during the celebration.
