Mother Arrested in Toddler’s Death Case
A woman named Shanna Kay Whitton has been arrested after the death of her 15-month-old son, Matthew. She is now facing multiple serious charges, including first-degree felony murder, child abuse, aggravated child endangerment, and aggravated arson. Authorities have confirmed that she has been in jail since October 9, 2025, but initially for a separate fire-related case connected to her child’s room.
What Was First Believed
In August 2025, the child was believed to have died after choking. According to early reports, the toddler suddenly lost consciousness, and despite efforts by medical teams to save him, he died in the hospital. At that time, the incident looked like a tragic but common accident involving young children.
Autopsy Reveals the Truth
However, the autopsy report completely changed the direction of the case. Medical experts found that the child did not die due to choking. Instead, the cause of death was identified as hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, which means the brain was damaged due to lack of oxygen. Doctors concluded that this condition resulted from intentional asphyxiation.
