'Shopping cart killer' condemned to life in prison for the deaths of two women

A man known as the “shopping cart killer” has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of murdering two women in Virginia in 2021.

According to reports, Anthony Eugene Robinson, 39, received two life sentences on May 22 after being found guilty earlier this year of multiple murder-related charges.

The case gained national attention because investigators said Robinson used shopping carts to move victims’ bodies after the killings.

Robinson Convicted of Killing Two Women

A jury convicted Robinson in January 2025 of first-degree murder, aggravated murder, and concealing dead bodies in connection with the deaths of Tonita Smith, 39, and Beth Redmon, 54.

Authorities discovered the women’s bodies in a vacant lot in 2021. Investigators said both victims died from severe physical trauma, although they were killed at different times.

Police Say Dating Apps Were Used to Target Victims

During the investigation, police learned Robinson allegedly used dating apps to meet women before bringing them back to motel rooms.

At trial, prosecutors presented surveillance footage showing Robinson entering motel rooms with the victims on separate occasions.

According to reports, cameras later captured him leaving while pushing shopping carts covered with sheets, which investigators believed contained the victims’ bodies.

The disturbing evidence became a major part of the prosecution’s case against him.

Suspected in Additional Deaths

Authorities believe Robinson may be connected to other deaths beyond the Virginia murders.

He is reportedly wanted in Washington, D.C., in connection with the death of Sonya Champ, whose body was found near a metro station inside a shopping cart.

Investigators also suspect Robinson may have been involved in the deaths of Stephanie Harrison and Cheyenne Brown in Fairfax County, Virginia.

However, no formal charges have been filed in those cases so far.

Defense Plans to Appeal Conviction

Reports state that Robinson’s legal team plans to appeal the conviction and sentencing.

During the investigation, police officials noted that Robinson had very little previous criminal history before the murders, something authorities described as unusual considering the severity of the crimes.

The case remains one of the most disturbing serial killing investigations in recent Virginia history.
