A chaotic early morning shootout in downtown Shreveport left two people injured after police officers encountered multiple suspects allegedly firing guns in a crowded entertainment area, authorities said Monday.
According to the Shreveport Police Department, the shooting happened around 3 a.m. in the 100 block of Commerce Street, where officers responding to reports of violence found a large crowd gathered in the downtown area.
Police say officers then witnessed two separate groups exchanging gunfire in the street.
Police Say Officers Opened Fire During Chaos
Authorities said the suspects began running away after officers arrived at the scene.
During the confrontation, four Shreveport police officers discharged their weapons.
Investigators have not yet confirmed how many shots were fired by the suspects or the officers during the incident.
Police also have not publicly stated whether any suspects were struck by officers’ gunfire.
Two People Injured During Incident
Officials confirmed that one person suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A second individual was reportedly treated for a separate injury that was not related to gunfire.
Authorities did not release the identities or ages of those injured.
Importantly, no police officers were hurt during the incident.
Multiple Suspects Taken Into Custody
The Shreveport Police Department said four people were taken into custody following the shooting.
Police have not yet announced specific charges against those individuals as the investigation continues.
Investigators also recovered several firearms from the crime scene.
Louisiana State Police Leading Investigation
Because officers fired their weapons during the confrontation, the officer-involved shooting investigation has been turned over to Louisiana State Police.
As part of standard procedure, all four officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while investigators review the incident.
Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding body camera footage, witness statements, or ballistic evidence.

The shooting has once again raised concerns about gun violence in busy nightlife and downtown entertainment areas.
Commerce Street is known as a popular gathering area in downtown Shreveport, especially during late-night weekend hours when crowds are large.
Witnesses reportedly fled the area as gunfire erupted, creating panic and confusion in the crowded street.
