Six people were found dead inside a cargo train boxcar in Laredo, Texas, on Sunday, raising questions about the circumstances of their deaths. The bodies were discovered in a Union Pacific train at a rail yard in Laredo, a city located along the southern border of the U.S., about 160 miles south of San Antonio.
Discovery of the Bodies
Laredo Police Department officials reported that they received a call at approximately 3:00 p.m. local time on Sunday from an employee at the Union Pacific rail yard, alerting them to the discovery. The bodies were found during a routine inspection of the train, which was parked at the rail yard. By the time authorities arrived, no survivors were found.
The identities, ages, and immigration statuses of the deceased individuals have not yet been disclosed. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of death, as the circumstances remain unclear. Temperatures in Laredo that afternoon were in the low to mid-90s, although it is still uncertain if heat played a role in the fatalities.
Ongoing Investigation
Laredo Police spokesperson Joe Baeza emphasized that it is still early in the investigation, and there is not much information to release at this time. The Laredo Police Department is working closely with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Texas Rangers to investigate the incident.
Union Pacific, the freight company that operates the train, expressed its sorrow over the tragedy and stated that it is cooperating with authorities to aid in the investigation.
Laredo’s Role in U.S.-Mexico Trade
Laredo, known for being one of Texas’ largest trade hubs with Mexico, handles a significant portion of the state’s land port trade, accounting for 62% of the trade, valued at around $340 billion. This major trade route makes Laredo a crucial point of entry and exit for goods between the two countries.
A Tragic Loss
“This is a very unfortunate event,” said Laredo Police’s Jose Espinoza. “Too many lives were lost.” Authorities are continuing to gather information and work on identifying the victims and understanding what led to their deaths.
The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released as the authorities continue their work.
