This tragic case from South Carolina highlights the devastating consequences of unresolved emotions, betrayal, and violent reactions. A man’s discovery that his child was not biologically his, compounded by the revelation of an affair, led to a violent act that has forever altered the lives of everyone involved.
Heartbreaking Betrayal Leads to Murder
Stephen White, a 34-year-old man from South Carolina, was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder and possession of a weapon. This sentence follows a violent incident that took place on August 12, 2024, which ended with the death of 34-year-old Erin Lee Thomas. White’s actions were fueled by an emotional discovery that shattered his life.
The Discovery That Shattered White’s World
According to White’s lawyer, the man learned after his daughter’s birth that he was not her biological father. Instead, Erin Lee Thomas was the father. White’s lawyer explained that upon this revelation, “something inside him snapped.”
The backstory is painful: White’s wife had had an affair with Thomas before they married. Although she confessed to the affair, White chose to forgive her. However, what he did not know was that she resumed the affair with Thomas, leading to her pregnancy with his child.
This revelation left White devastated and feeling betrayed. The emotional toll this information took on him eventually drove him to commit an irreversible act of violence.
The Deadly Incident at the Courthouse
The tragic events unfolded after White and Thomas both attended a child custody hearing. White, who had just left his lawyer’s office, got into his car and intentionally hit Thomas, who was driving his own vehicle some distance away. After hitting him, White exited his car and approached Thomas, who was unable to escape due to the severity of his injuries.
White stood over Thomas, who had sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg and pelvis. In an act of calculated rage, White attempted to shoot Thomas. After a jammed misfire, White successfully shot Thomas in the head, killing him.
The Aftermath of the Attack
White quickly discarded the weapon and surrendered to law enforcement. The incident, which occurred in the parking lot of the Laurens County Courthouse, was witnessed by courthouse staff, attorneys, and deputies, leaving many with lasting emotional scars.
In court, Solicitor David Stumbo described the attack as “calculated and deeply personal.” He emphasized that the courthouse, a place meant to resolve disputes, had become the site of an unimaginable act of violence.
The Impact on the Family
As a result of White’s actions, not only was Erin Lee Thomas tragically lost, but an innocent child also lost two father figures: Thomas, the biological father, and White, the man who had raised the child.
Stumbo expressed the heartbreak that resonated beyond the immediate family, noting that White’s violent reaction to the discovery had “permanently” taken two important figures out of the child’s life.
The Sentence
On April 20, 2026, White was sentenced to 40 years in prison, 35 years for the murder charge and an additional five years for possession of a firearm. His sentence will run consecutively. While White has accepted responsibility for his actions, the devastating impact on both families is immeasurable.
