A heartbreaking shooting in Flint, Michigan, has left a family and an entire community grieving after 9-year-old Tyhari Knox was killed while sleeping in her bedroom. The tragic incident happened when gunfire erupted outside the family’s home during the early hours of the morning.
Bullets tore through windows and walls, striking the young girl as she slept. Police later recovered hundreds of shell casings from the scene, but investigators still have no suspects or clear motive in the case.
As Tyhari’s family struggles with the painful loss, they are speaking publicly about the violence that took their daughter’s life. Community leaders and local officials are also joining them in calling for peace and stronger action against the growing gun violence affecting Flint neighborhoods.
Tyhari Knox Was Killed While Sleeping
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on May 8, 2026, according to local reports. At the time of the attack, Tyhari was asleep inside her bedroom when bullets suddenly began hitting the house. A 14-year-old girl inside the home was also seriously injured during the shooting and required emergency medical treatment.
Police initially recovered nearly 100 shell casings from the area, but investigators later confirmed that around 200 shell casings were eventually collected from the crime scene. The amount of gunfire shocked both residents and officials.
Authorities said no arrests have been made so far, and investigators are still trying to determine who was responsible and why the home was targeted.
Parents Describe Their Pain After Losing Their Daughter
At the time of the shooting, Tyhari’s parents, Tyraye Knox and Alexis Smith, were downstairs watching television with three other children who were not injured.
Tyhari’s mother said she could not understand why anyone would carry out such a violent attack on a home filled with children. She described her daughter as a joyful little girl who loved TikTok, singing, and dancing.
The family is now pleading with anyone who may know something about the shooting to come forward and cooperate with police. Tyhari’s mother urged people not to protect those responsible and warned that helping suspects avoid justice would only create more pain for families already suffering.
Her father also spoke emotionally about the violence affecting young people in the city. He said the constant shootings and retaliation must stop before more innocent children lose their lives.
Community Leaders Demand Action Against Gun Violence
Tyhari’s death has sparked strong reactions from city leaders and community members. Flint City Councilwoman Tonya Burns called the shooting a horrifying act that should serve as a wake-up call for the city.
Burns said Tyhari would never get the chance to experience important moments in life such as graduating from school, attending prom, or celebrating future birthdays. She described the killing as “the execution of innocence” and said families across Flint are living in fear because of the growing violence.
According to Burns, the community can no longer accept children being killed in their own homes as something normal. She said leaders must push for accountability and stronger action to protect families and neighborhoods.
Police Continue Investigating the Shooting
The Flint Police Department said the case remains a top priority. Investigators are dedicating resources to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
Police have not yet shared a possible motive for the shooting, and authorities continue asking the public for information that may help solve the case.
The large number of shell casings found at the scene has raised concerns about the dangerous level of violence involved in the attack. Residents in the area have also expressed fear and frustration over the ongoing gun violence in the city.
Family Launches GoFundMe for Funeral Support
As the investigation continues, Tyhari’s mother has started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and support the family during this difficult time.
The tragic loss has deeply affected not only Tyhari’s loved ones but also many people throughout the Flint community. Her parents said they hope speaking publicly about their daughter’s death will encourage others to stand together against violence and help prevent more innocent lives from being lost.
