A new audit has found that the Ascension Parish School Board failed to properly notify authorities after an employee allegedly stole money from a middle school.
What the Audit Found
According to the Louisiana Legislative Auditor, a school employee, Kayla Jones, allegedly took $12,624.92 from Central Middle School while working as a secretary in June 2025. The audit states that the school board did not inform the local District Attorney’s office about the suspected theft, which is typically required when public funds may have been misused.
Legal Status of the Case
Despite the reporting failure, the employee was eventually arrested and prosecuted. However, the audit noted that no restitution had been made and no insurance claim had been filed at the time of the report.
School Board Response
In response to the findings, the Ascension Parish School Board said it plans to improve its internal processes. Officials stated they will strengthen controls and ensure that the District Attorney is notified immediately if there is reasonable suspicion of financial misconduct in the future.
Why It Matters
The case highlights gaps in oversight and accountability when it comes to public funds in schools. Proper reporting is important not only for legal action but also for recovering lost money and maintaining public trust.
