A shocking child neglect case involving a severely malnourished teenage girl has led to another major courtroom development after the girl’s stepmother pleaded no contest to multiple charges.
The case first gained national attention when authorities discovered the 14-year-old victim weighed only 35 pounds and was suffering from several life-threatening medical conditions. Investigators later uncovered allegations that the teenager had been isolated, denied proper care, and locked inside her room for long periods.
Now, one of the adults accused in the case has officially entered a plea as the criminal proceedings continue against the remaining defendants.
Stepmother Pleads No Contest in Teen Neglect Case
Authorities say the disturbing case began on August 25, 2025, when officers responded to a home after receiving reports that a teenage girl was extremely weak and had not eaten for several days.
When first responders arrived at the residence, they reportedly believed the girl was between 6 and 8 years old because of her extremely small size and severe physical condition. Investigators later confirmed she was actually 14 years old.
The victim, whose identity has not been publicly released, was immediately transported to a hospital for emergency treatment.
Teenager Suffered Severe Medical Problems
Doctors later revealed the teenager weighed only 35 pounds when she arrived at the hospital. Medical staff reportedly found that she was suffering from severe malnutrition along with several dangerous health conditions.
According to investigators, the girl had pancreatitis, acute hepatitis, respiratory failure, cardiac dysfunction, pressure sores, and optic nerve neuropathy.
Authorities also discovered that she had not visited a doctor in several years.
Investigators further alleged that the girl was frequently locked inside her room and monitored using a camera system inside the house.
Four Adults Charged in Connection With Abuse
In November 2025, prosecutors charged four adults in connection with the teenager’s condition. Those charged included her father, Walter Goodman; her stepmother, Melissa Goodman; Melissa Goodman’s adult daughter, Savannah LeFever; and LeFever’s partner, Kayla Stemler.
All four adults initially faced multiple counts of chronic neglect involving a child.
According to court reports, 52-year-old Melissa Goodman pleaded no contest on May 6 to one count of chronic neglect causing great bodily harm, one count of chronic neglect causing emotional harm, and one count of false imprisonment.
As part of the plea agreement, three additional neglect charges against her were dismissed.
Other Defendants Still Facing Court Proceedings
Court proceedings for the remaining defendants are still ongoing.
Reports state that Kayla Stemler was expected to enter a plea shortly after Melissa Goodman’s court appearance and is now reportedly facing three similar charges.
Meanwhile, Walter Goodman is scheduled for a pretrial conference later in May, while Savannah LeFever’s pretrial conference is expected in June.
Authorities have not yet announced whether additional plea agreements could happen in the future.
Victim Showing Major Signs of Recovery
Despite the horrifying conditions investigators described, family members say the teenage victim has made significant progress since being removed from the home and receiving medical treatment.
A fundraising page created by the girl’s cousin shared updates about her physical and emotional recovery.
According to the updates, the teenager has grown several inches and doubled her body weight within just a few months. Family members also explained that she is slowly regaining muscle strength after years of severe neglect.
The update stated that simple daily activities, including walking up stairs and balancing properly, have become easier as her body continues healing.
Relatives also shared that the victim is learning important self-care skills such as bathing, brushing her teeth, and caring for her hair — tasks they say were denied to her for many years.
Family Says Teen Continues to Thrive
Another family update released in March said the teenager continues improving emotionally and physically while criminal proceedings move forward.
Relatives explained they could not publicly share every detail because of the ongoing court case but stressed that the victim is doing much better than expected.
Supporters following the case online have continued expressing relief that the teenager survived and is finally receiving proper care and support.
Melissa Goodman Faces Possible Long Prison Sentence
Melissa Goodman is scheduled to be sentenced on July 1.
According to reports, she could face up to 25 years in prison for the neglect charge involving great bodily harm. She may also face up to 15 years for emotional harm and an additional six years for false imprisonment.
The final sentence will be determined by the court during the upcoming hearing.
