This weekend is packed with exciting outdoor events across Louisiana, especially in cities like New Orleans and Lafayette. From big festivals to smaller local gatherings, there’s a lot happening. But along with the fun, there’s also a chance of changing weather conditions that people should keep in mind while planning their outings.
Weather Outlook for Louisiana This Weekend
According to the Storm Prediction Center, parts of Louisiana may experience severe weather over the weekend. Areas along and north of US 190 are at a higher risk, with a “slight risk” category for strong storms.
This means there could be thunderstorms with gusty winds or even hail in those regions. While not guaranteed, the possibility is strong enough that people should stay alert.
What About Festival Areas Like Lafayette and New Orleans
The good news is that areas south of US 190, including Lafayette and New Orleans, fall under a lower “marginal risk” category. This includes popular events like Festival International in Lafayette and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
In these areas, storms are less likely but still possible, especially during the afternoon or late-night hours. Weather experts say there are two main chances for storms along the I-10 corridor.
Two Possible Storm Windows
The first chance for storms could come in the afternoon, as weakening storms from central Louisiana move south. There is a small possibility that these could stay strong enough to reach southern areas.
The second chance may happen overnight, as another line of storms develops in southeastern Texas and moves toward Louisiana. These could bring brief periods of strong winds and rain before early Saturday morning.
Rain Chances and What It Means for You
Interestingly, overall rain chances remain quite low. Forecasts suggest about a 20% chance of rain on Friday and around 30% on Saturday in areas like Lafayette.
This means that if rain does occur, it will likely come in short bursts, such as quick thunderstorms, rather than long periods of rain.
Should You Change Your Plans
At this point, there is no strong reason to cancel or change weekend plans. Most of the severe weather is expected to stay north of major festival areas. Even if storms do reach southern regions, they are likely to pass quickly.
However, it’s important to stay updated with weather alerts and be prepared for sudden changes, especially if you’re attending outdoor events.
