More than six years after the tragic killing of Lafayette teen Matthew Carter, one of the suspects has appeared in court seeking early release from juvenile custody.
Juvenile Suspect Seeks Early Release
Rendavian Warren, who was 13 at the time of the January 2020 shooting, is currently serving a juvenile life sentence scheduled to end in April 2027, when he turns 21. Warren filed a petition requesting to be released roughly a year early, prompting a hearing at the 19th Judicial District Courthouse in Baton Rouge.
Details of Matthew Carter’s Death
Matthew Carter, a senior at Comeaux High School, was shot while sitting in his Camaro on North Meyers Drive in Lafayette. Investigators said two juveniles, ages 13 and 14, attempted to rob him. Carter survived the initial shooting but remained hospitalized for two weeks before succumbing to his injuries.
Court Proceedings
During the hearing, attorneys, prosecutors, and the judge discussed Warren’s petition and the legal process moving forward. The court confirmed that the petition will remain temporarily sealed while it is reviewed before a decision is made.
Matthew Carter’s parents, Chelline and Jerry Carter, attended the hearing. They expressed understanding of the legal process but stated that they believe the original sentence should remain in place. The family has continued to advocate for stronger penalties in violent crimes involving juveniles.
Family Advocacy
Jerry Carter emphasized the need for legal reforms to prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies, saying, “We need stronger laws to ensure that another family does not have to go through what we went through.” He added that serious violent crimes committed by juveniles should be treated with the same accountability as adult crimes.
The next court date in the case has been scheduled for June 17, when further proceedings regarding Warren’s petition will continue.
