A tragic shooting at the Mall of Louisiana has resulted in the death of a teenager and left five others injured, deeply affecting Baton Rouge and surrounding areas.
Teenager Dead, Five Others Injured in Mall Shooting
The shooting occurred Thursday afternoon in the busy food court area of the Mall of Louisiana, located on Bluebonnet Boulevard. Authorities confirmed that 17-year-old Martha Odom, a senior at Ascension Episcopal School, later succumbed to her injuries. The school described her as a “bright and joyful presence” whose kindness touched everyone she met.
Suspect Turns Himself In
Baton Rouge Police reported that 17-year-old Markell Lee has turned himself in and is now facing charges of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted murder, and illegal use of a weapon. Lee is currently being held at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
A second suspect has been identified but remains at large. Investigators have identified additional persons of interest, and more arrests may occur as the investigation progresses.
Victims Still Recovering
In addition to Odom’s tragic death, several others were injured in the shooting. 43-year-old Donnie Guillory remains in critical condition and is undergoing surgery. Authorities have not yet released detailed information about the other victims’ conditions but confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
Community Response
Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse and Mayor-President Sid Edwards addressed the public after the incident. Chief Morse and Mayor Edwards praised the bravery of first responders who rushed into the danger. Mayor Edwards also urged law enforcement to act swiftly against those involved in violent activities, while emphasizing the importance of not generalizing or stereotyping young people in the wake of the shooting.
