A disturbing case from Texas has shocked the local community after police arrested a man accused of secretly imprisoning his disabled wife inside their luxury home for years. Authorities say the woman was isolated from the outside world, given very little food, and denied medical care. The situation only came to light after a rare opportunity allowed her to call for help.
Texas Man Accused of Locking Disabled Wife in Bedroom for Years
A 46-year-old man from Houston, James Earl Johnson, has been arrested and charged after authorities say he held his disabled wife captive inside their home for about five years.
According to court records, Johnson faces two serious charges:
- Injury to a disabled individual
- Abandoning or endangering a disabled individual
Prosecutors allege that Johnson locked his 46-year-old wife inside a bedroom in their home in southeast Houston and prevented her from contacting anyone outside.
Officials say she had no phone access and very little contact with the outside world during the alleged years of confinement.
How the Victim Was Finally Able to Call 911
The alleged captivity was discovered on March 6, when the victim finally managed to place a 911 call.
Authorities say the opportunity came when Johnson accidentally left his phone in the room before leaving the house.
The woman used the phone to quickly call emergency services.
However, according to court documents, Johnson returned home while the call was still in progress.
Investigators say he:
- Entered the room during the call
- Struck the victim
- Carried her back to the bed
- Ended the call with the dispatcher
Despite the interrupted call, authorities were alerted and later responded to investigate the situation.
Allegations of Starvation and Neglect
Prosecutors also claim the woman was severely neglected during her confinement.
Court documents state Johnson provided very limited food.
Investigators say he would sometimes leave only one egg for her to eat, and occasionally give her small portions of dinner.
Police also allege that Johnson failed to provide proper medical care to his wife throughout the five-year period.
These conditions are part of the charges accusing him of abusing and endangering a disabled person.
Police Investigation and Arrest
After the attempted emergency call, officers went to the home to investigate.
The investigation eventually led to Johnson’s arrest.
Emergency medical teams transported the victim to a local hospital, where she remained several days later.
Her adult son spoke briefly to media but did not share details about:
- Her medical condition
- The nature of her disability
Life Inside the Family’s Million-Dollar Home
Court records show the family lived in a large house in the Clear Lake area of Houston.
The home was valued at more than $1 million.
Property records from the Harris Central Appraisal District show the house was appraised in 2025 at $1,019,237.
The couple also lived there with their children, including one child who is only 6 years old.
The case has raised serious concerns about how such alleged abuse could remain hidden for years inside a busy residential neighborhood.
Previous Attempt to Report Abuse
Investigators say the woman may have previously tried to alert authorities.
Police were reportedly called to the home in November, months before the recent incident.
However, when officers arrived, the woman told them that she and her children had been instructed not to speak to police.
Because of this, officers left the home without filing a report, according to local media reports.
Release on Bond and Court Conditions
After his arrest, Johnson was taken to the Harris County Jail.
He was later released after posting $50,000 bond.
The court has imposed several conditions on his release, including:
- No contact with his wife
- No possession of firearms
- Wearing a GPS monitoring device
Johnson’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 18.
