Timothy Hudson, 16, made his first public court appearance in connection with the murder and s**ual assault of his 18-year-old stepsister, Anna Kepner, during a family cruise in November.
Miami federal Judge Edwin Torres allowed Hudson to remain free on supervised release while officials consider moving him to central Florida to be closer to family. The judge emphasized that his decision might have been different if Hudson were an adult.
Bail and Supervision Conditions
Hudson has been staying with his paternal uncle since being charged in February. Judge Torres ruled that he may leave the house only under the supervision of his uncle or aunt and must wear a GPS tracker. The judge has not yet issued a final decision regarding detention or bail.
Prosecutor Alejandra López argued Hudson poses a serious risk to the community and questioned whether more victims would be necessary for the court to recognize the danger. Defense attorney Evan Kuhl countered that Hudson had complied with all bail conditions to date.
Details of the Crime
Kepner, a high school cheerleader, was found dead in her cabin on a Caribbean Carnival Cruise, wrapped in a blanket under her bed. Authorities determined she had been s**ually assaulted and strangled.
Investigators said Hudson had previously exhibited obsessive behavior toward Kepner and had been caught attempting a s**ual assault in the past. The case was initially handled in juvenile court but has since been transferred to adult court, where a grand jury indicted him.
Charges and Trial Information
Hudson faces charges of murder and aggravated s**ual abuse and could receive a life sentence if convicted. His trial is currently scheduled to begin in September.
Prosecutors emphasized that the crimes were committed against a victim Hudson was being raised to view as a sibling, highlighting the premeditated and unprovoked nature of the acts.
