The Baton Rouge Constable’s Office is taking action to reduce the backlog of over 100,000 outstanding warrants with a city court warrant pick-up initiative that begins on Monday and will continue through Thursday.
Addressing the Warrant Backlog
This initiative follows a Warrant Resolution Clinic held in March, which gave residents the opportunity to resolve outstanding warrants by connecting with legal and community resources. The new pick-up operation will involve deputy constables and neighboring agencies working together to locate and pick up individuals with outstanding warrants tied to Baton Rouge City Court.
Goal of the Initiative
According to Constable Terrica Williams, the Constable’s Office has been working to reduce the warrant backlog since 2019, with progress slowed by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of the initiative is to expedite the process for individuals with minor offenses, ensuring they aren’t detained for extended periods and avoiding additional fees that often accumulate while waiting for a court date.
Encouragement to Resolve Warrants
Residents who may have an outstanding warrant are encouraged to contact the Constable’s Office to settle the matter and avoid being picked up during the initiative. The goal is to help residents navigate the court system faster and reduce the burden of unresolved legal matters.
