A man accused of carrying out a random and brutal stabbing in Downtown Los Angeles was already on parole for a previous killing, according to authorities.
Kenneth Gibson, 39, has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder in the attack on Riffat Sultana Kazmi, a 70-year-old woman who remains in critical condition.
Sudden, Unprovoked Attack
Police say the assault happened near Grand Hope Park on Hope Street around 10:15 a.m.
Kazmi was walking along the street when Gibson allegedly passed her, then suddenly turned and stabbed her in the neck without warning.
She was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery.
A nearby physician’s assistant helped save her life by applying pressure to the wound before paramedics arrived.
Suspect’s Criminal History
According to prosecutors, Gibson has an extensive criminal record, including multiple felony convictions for violent and drug-related offenses.
He was also reportedly on parole and had been identified as a suspect in the earlier killing of another homeless man.
Previous Killing Linked to Suspect
The earlier victim, Byron Fuentes, 48, was found dead near a freeway on-ramp in Downtown Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined he died from blunt-force head trauma.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Gibson now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and use of a deadly weapon.
Nathan Hochman described the attack as “senseless” and said it has shaken the community.
A judge set bail at $2.75 million, and Gibson remains in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 16.
