For the Kennedy family, political differences have long played out on a national stage, and the divide over Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) has been especially public and painful. Tim Shriver, nephew of former President John F. Kennedy, recently shared his thoughts on this family rift, describing it as “devastating” and urging Americans not to make the same mistakes when it comes to navigating political disagreements.
A Deeply Personal Family Divide
Speaking on “Special Report” on Tuesday, Shriver, the CEO of UNITE, reflected on the toll that political divisions have taken within his family. He noted that the split between family members, particularly over RFK Jr.’s political journey, has been difficult to witness for his generation and the younger generation as well.
“In my family, it’s devastating for my generation, my cousins, my brother, my sisters, for my children’s generation who see their parents unable to navigate differences of opinion,” Shriver said, emphasizing the personal and emotional cost of these divisions.
The family’s differences became more visible when RFK Jr. ran for president as a Democrat, switched to an independent bid, and later endorsed President Donald Trump. This endorsement, which shocked many in the Kennedy family, further deepened the rift.
The RFK Jr. Endorsement and Family Backlash
In August 2024, a group of Kennedy family members released a statement condemning RFK Jr.’s endorsement of Trump, calling it “a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear.” They expressed disappointment, labeling it as a “sad ending to a sad story.”
Despite the tension, Shriver stated that he would continue to include RFK Jr. in family gatherings. “I’m going to have dinner with him next week,” Shriver said, expressing his willingness to maintain family bonds despite their political differences.
When asked about Thanksgiving 2024, Shriver confirmed that RFK Jr. would still be welcomed at his table, even after the public endorsement of Trump and the family’s written statement.
A Call for Civility and the Dignity Index
Shriver has expressed concerns about the rising contempt in political discourse, not just within his family but across the country. He pointed out that approximately 100 million Americans have severed ties with relatives over political disagreements, which he believes is contributing to the growing division in the nation.
To combat this, Shriver is focusing on UNITE’s new initiative, the “Dignity Index”, which aims to measure and reduce contempt in communication. The tool encourages individuals to reflect on whether they view others as having inherent worth and dignity, regardless of their political views.
The Dignity Index offers a scale ranging from healthy, respectful communication to dangerous dehumanization. At one extreme is the belief that “each of us is born with inherent worth,” while at the other end lies the harmful mentality of “They’re not even human.
It’s our moral duty to destroy them before they destroy us.” Shriver hopes that this tool will help people shift away from hostile, divisive language and restore civil discourse.
Moving Forward: A Hope for Healing
Through his efforts, Shriver aims to help families and communities find ways to bridge the political divides that have become so prevalent in the United States. “The reality is that this dehumanizing contempt is tearing our country apart,” Shriver said, underscoring the need for more compassionate, respectful conversations.
By fostering dignity and respect in communication, Shriver hopes to prevent other families from experiencing the same kind of fracture that has affected the Kennedys. As Shriver himself continues to engage with his cousin, RFK Jr., despite their differences, he offers a message of hope—that understanding and dignity can help heal rifts, even in the most divided of families.
