A serious security scare has emerged in the United States after a man accused of planting an explosive device near a major military base reportedly fled the country. The case has raised national security concerns, especially because the location involved is one of the most sensitive military sites in the country.
What Happened Near the Military Base
The incident took place near MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. Authorities say a suspicious device was placed near the base’s visitor center on the night of March 10. However, it was not discovered until March 16, which has raised questions about how long it remained unnoticed.
According to investigators, the device appeared to be an improvised explosive or contained dangerous materials. While full lab confirmation was still pending earlier, officials treated the situation as a serious threat.
Who Is the Main Suspect
Federal authorities have identified the main suspect as 20-year-old Alen Zheng. According to statements made by Kash Patel, Zheng is believed to have fled to China shortly after the device was planted.
Officials say Zheng left the United States on March 12, just two days after the alleged incident. Investigators are now working on efforts to bring him back to face charges.
Role of the Suspect’s Sister
Zheng’s sister, Ann Mary Zheng, has also been charged in connection with the case. She reportedly travelled with him to China but later returned to the United States on March 17, where she was arrested.
According to prosecutors, she is facing charges such as helping after the crime and tampering with evidence. Authorities believe she may have helped hide a vehicle linked to the investigation, which played a role in building the case.
Evidence Collected by Investigators
Investigators have gathered several pieces of evidence linking Alen Zheng to the crime. These include surveillance footage and a phone allegedly used to make a 911 call about the device after it was placed.
Officials also mentioned that the case expanded after they received additional information, including a video claiming responsibility for the act. This further strengthened their suspicion and helped identify the accused.
Why This Case Is Serious
The location of the incident makes this case especially important. MacDill Air Force Base is not just any military base. It houses key operations like the United States Central Command and Special Operations Command.
Because of this, even a potential threat in the area is treated with extreme seriousness. After the device was found, authorities quickly implemented safety measures, including a temporary shelter-in-place order to protect people on the base.
Charges Against the Main Suspect
Alen Zheng is facing multiple serious charges, including attempting to damage government property using fire or explosives, creating a destructive device, and possessing an unregistered destructive device. These charges could lead to severe legal consequences if he is found guilty.
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities are working closely to gather more evidence and ensure all those involved are held accountable. One of the main challenges now is bringing Zheng back to the United States from China so he can face trial.
