Get ready for a day of fun, fishing, and learning! St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre is hosting the annual “Kids Fishing Event” on Saturday, April 18, at the Bonnet Carré Spillway recreational area near Norco. This free event is open to youths ages 7 to 15 and promises a day full of friendly competition, education, and outdoor fun.

The event will feature friendly fishing competitions and educational stations where kids can learn important fishing techniques such as knot tying and fish identification. Rods, reels, and bait will be provided, though participants are welcome to bring their own fishing equipment if preferred.
Sheriff Mike Tregre expressed enthusiasm for the event: “Don’t worry if you’ve never fished before — come out and we will teach you. This event offers kids a chance to enjoy a great outdoor activity while learning fishing techniques. It also gives me and my officers the opportunity to interact with our younger community members.”
Prizes and Fun
The catch-and-release event will also feature assistance from representatives of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, who will help participants identify fish. Volunteers will be available to demonstrate knot-tying techniques.
Prizes will be awarded by age group, including:
- First fish caught
- Largest catch
- Most fish caught
A free lunch will be provided, making it a full day of fun for the family. The event runs from 8 a.m. to noon and is limited to the first 100 participants, so be sure to register early!
