Massie’s Independent Record
Massie, a congressman since 2012, had long resisted strict party loyalty. He pushed for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, criticized the war in Iran, and voted against Trump’s signature tax legislation. Despite attempting to reassure voters that support for him could coexist with support for Trump, Massie’s positions drew opposition from pro-Trump voters.

McConnell, who criticized Trump over Jan. 6 and some Cabinet picks, is stepping down after becoming the longest-serving Senate leader in history. Barr and Cameron both courted Trump’s support while balancing recognition of McConnell’s decades of service, reflecting a party in transition.
