The Thibodaux Biddy Basketball 10-and-under and 12-and-under teams received special recognition from city leaders after their impressive victories at the World Championships in March.
Thibodaux Teams Honored with Special Day
The 10U and 12U teams, both of which won the AA bracket at the World Championships, were celebrated at a recent city council meeting. The teams were acknowledged for their hard work and achievements, with officials even naming a day in their honor.
12U Team Triumphs After Tough Championship Round
The 12U team, coached by Andrew Szush, had a challenging road to the title. In the championship, they had to defeat the number one seed twice to secure their victory.
“We won the first game, and then we felt really good about where we were,” Szush said. Despite a close second game, the team stuck to their game plan and emerged victorious. “It was a much closer game, but we were able to come out ahead,” Szush added.
10U Team Overcomes Adversity
The 10U team, coached by Jasmin Williams Sr., faced a tough start to the tournament, losing both of their pool play games. However, they didn’t let that defeat define them.
“We felt defeated, but I’m that coach that’s like, we’re gonna rise,” Williams said. His motivational approach helped the team overcome their early struggles, leading them to battle through the rest of the tournament and ultimately win the championship.
Coaches Proud of Their Teams
Both coaches expressed their pride in the players’ dedication and effort throughout the season.
“They left it all on the floor,” Williams said. “At the end of the day, that’s all us coaches are looking for.”
A Special Surprise for the Teams
The recognition ceremony was a surprise for the teams. Williams said he anticipated receiving a certificate, but the honor of having a day named after them was unexpected and deeply appreciated.
“It’s not my day,” Williams said. “It’s their day.”
Mayor Clement’s Words of Praise
Thibodaux Mayor Kevin Clement highlighted that the recognition wasn’t just about winning trophies. He emphasized the value of youth sports in building life skills and teamwork.
“Both of them competed at a high level,” Clement said. “Youth sports teach kids how to work as a team, and it’s much more than basketball.”
A Day to Remember
With two championships and a citywide honor to their name, the young athletes now have memories they will carry with them long after the season ends.
