A Saturday evening shootout near the White House has raised fresh concerns about political violence targeting President Donald Trump and senior administration officials. The incident involved a 21-year-old Maryland man, Nasire Best, who opened fire near a Secret Service checkpoint before being neutralized by agents.
Details of the White House Shooting
Authorities said Best approached a checkpoint near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW around 6 p.m. local time, removed a weapon from his bag, and fired approximately three shots toward officers guarding the executive mansion.
Best reportedly had prior encounters with the Secret Service and a documented history of mental health issues. No agents were seriously injured in the incident.
A senior administration official noted that the shooting comes amid a growing pattern of security threats against Trump and his administration, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by federal security personnel.
Recent Related Security Incidents
The White House shooting follows closely on another armed threat targeting the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) Dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel.
Authorities identified the suspect in that incident as Cole Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. Allen reportedly traveled to Washington armed with multiple weapons and a manifesto expressing intent to target senior Trump administration officials.
Investigators also noted Allen posted anti-Trump rhetoric and expressed hostility toward Christians on social media. Law enforcement intervened before Allen could enter the event.
Background: Prior Threats Against Trump
The WHCA incident occurred less than two years after President Trump survived two separate assassination attempts during his 2024 campaign.
In July 2024, a gunman opened fire at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, grazing Trump’s ear, killing one attendee, and injuring several others before Secret Service agents fatally shot the suspect. Federal investigators later described the rally shooting as one of the most serious security failures in decades.
Security Concerns Intensify
These recent events highlight an escalating pattern of threats against Trump and senior officials, prompting continued enhancements to security measures and protocols. Authorities are investigating Best’s motives and potential connections while monitoring other potential threats to prevent similar incidents.
