Three police officers were injured during an intense standoff with a gunman in Syracuse, New York this past weekend. The incident unfolded over several hours and prompted large-scale police action and safety alerts for nearby residents.
Active Shooting and Police Response on May 9
Shortly after 10 a.m. local time on Saturday, May 9, the Syracuse Police Department (SPD) reported an ongoing shooting near “The Bricks” area close to Tyler Court. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area and find alternate routes as they investigated active gunfire.
About three hours after the first alert, police confirmed the situation remained very active, with the suspect still firing at responding officers. Residents in the surrounding area were told to shelter in place, and people not in the immediate vicinity were strongly advised to stay away entirely as the confrontation continued.
Suspect Taken Into Custody
By 4:30 p.m., the SPD announced in an update that a suspect had been taken into custody. Police confirmed, “At this time, there is no further threat to the public,” while still actively working the scene and gathering evidence.
Injuries to Responding Officers
Syracuse Police Chief Mark Rusin later told local media that three officers were wounded during the incident:
- Two officers were shot in the arm
- One officer sustained a hand injury
All three were transported to nearby hospitals, where their injuries were described as non–life‑threatening. Two of the officers were released later that afternoon, while one remained hospitalized for further treatment.
The suspect was also treated medically at the scene before being taken to the hospital.

Chief Rusin said the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office is considering charges that may include:
- Attempted murder
- Assault
- Criminal weapons possession
