Three people were stabbed, and a suspect was fatally shot by an officer on the subway station at Grand Central, according to authorities

A violent attack at New York City’s Grand Central Terminal left three people injured before police fatally shot the suspect. Authorities say the man, who referred to himself as “Lucifer,” carried out a random assault that has renewed concerns about subway safety.

The Incident

The attack took place around 9:40 a.m. on a subway platform beneath Grand Central Terminal.

According to the New York Police Department, the suspect was armed with a machete and began attacking people on the platform. Three victims — two men, ages 84 and 65, and a 70-year-old woman — were injured.

Authorities said two victims suffered cuts to the head and face, while another sustained a shoulder injury. All were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive.

The Suspect

Police identified the suspect as Anthony Griffin, 44.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Griffin had been behaving erratically and repeatedly claimed he was “Lucifer.” The incident was captured on officers’ body cameras.

Griffin was known to law enforcement and had more than a dozen prior arrests, including incidents involving weapons and violent behavior.

Police Response

Officers responding to the scene issued repeated commands for Griffin to drop the weapon — at least 20 times, according to officials.

Authorities said they attempted to de-escalate the situation and even offered help. However, Griffin advanced toward officers with the machete.

At that point, police opened fire. Griffin was struck and later died from his injuries.

Official Reactions

Jessica Tisch said the officers acted to protect the public on one of the city’s busiest transit platforms, emphasizing the danger posed by the suspect.

Kathy Hochul, governor of New York, described the attack as a senseless act of violence and praised officers for their quick response.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also thanked the police for preventing further harm and confirmed that an internal investigation is underway.

Broader Safety Concerns

The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about safety in New York City’s subway system following several high-profile attacks in recent years.

Officials have increased police presence in transit areas, with more than 175 additional officers recently assigned to subway patrols.

Despite these concerns, officials note that overall subway crime has declined in recent years.

Investigation Status

Authorities said the attack appears to be random and not linked to terrorism.

The NYPD is continuing its investigation and is expected to release body camera footage as part of its standard review process.
