A Colorado mother has been charged with second-degree murder after prosecutors accused her of enabling her teenage daughter’s severe alcohol ab*se for months, ultimately leading to the girl’s death. Investigators allege that the mother regularly supplied alcohol to her 16-year-old daughter, concealed the drinking from family members, and ignored repeated signs of serious health problems.
Colorado Mother Charged After Teen Daughter’s Death
The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced that 55-year-old Gretchen Ryan has been charged in connection with the death of her daughter, Grace Ryan, who died in March at the age of 16.
According to prosecutors, investigators uncovered evidence suggesting that Grace had been consuming large amounts of alcohol for an extended period. Authorities claim her mother played a direct role in providing the alcohol and facilitating the teenager’s access to it.
The case has drawn widespread attention because of the allegations surrounding the relationship between the mother and daughter and the circumstances leading up to the teen’s death.
Hundreds of Empty Alcohol Bottles Found
During the investigation, authorities discovered 173 empty alcohol bottles hidden under Grace’s bed and inside her closet.
According to prosecutors, the collection included multiple brands and sizes of vodka and other hard liquor. Investigators allege that much of the alcohol had been provided by Gretchen Ryan.
Officials say the discovery supported evidence suggesting prolonged and excessive alcohol consumption by the teenager.
The large number of bottles reportedly highlighted the extent of the drinking problem that investigators believe had developed inside the family home.
Messages Reveal Ongoing Alcohol Use
Prosecutors allege that digital evidence recovered during the investigation showed extensive communication between Grace and her mother regarding alcohol use.
According to the district attorney’s office, the pair frequently consumed alcohol and marijuana together. Investigators claim that beginning in September 2025, they discussed obtaining and consuming alcohol almost every day.
Authorities further allege that Gretchen Ryan regularly arranged alcohol deliveries to the home and took steps to hide Grace’s drinking from her father, who primarily lived in the basement of the residence.
The communications reportedly became a central part of the investigation and helped prosecutors build their case.
Teen Reportedly Suffered Serious Health Problems
Investigators say messages exchanged between Grace and her mother revealed growing health concerns in the months before her death.
According to prosecutors, Grace complained of vomiting blood, difficulty eating, trouble walking, and other severe symptoms associated with prolonged alcohol ab*se. The communications also allegedly showed that she was increasingly worried about her health.
Authorities claim that Grace repeatedly expressed fears that she was going to die and sought help from her mother.
Despite these warnings, prosecutors allege that the alcohol use continued.
Messages exchanged the night before Grace’s death reportedly showed that she was still communicating with her mother about feeling sick.
Disturbing Messages Allegedly Sent by Mother
Investigators also recovered messages that Gretchen Ryan allegedly sent to her daughter before her death.
According to court documents, some of the messages expressed fear, guilt, and concern about the consequences of her actions. Prosecutors allege that Ryan acknowledged she had made serious mistakes and worried she could face criminal charges.
The messages have become a key part of the evidence being examined by investigators and prosecutors.
Authorities argue that the communications demonstrate Ryan’s awareness of the dangerous situation involving her daughter.
Grace Found Dead Inside Family Home
Police were called to the family’s home in Arvada, Colorado, after receiving a report of an unresponsive teenage girl.
Grace was discovered dead in a bathroom. An iPad located near her body allegedly contained some of the final messages exchanged between her and her mother.
According to investigators, Grace’s final outgoing message was sent on the evening of March 8. Authorities say messages sent later from Ryan’s device received no response.
Court documents state that emergency services were not contacted until approximately 8:15 the following morning.
Autopsy Revealed Effects of Long-Term Alcohol Ab*se
An autopsy determined that Grace’s cause of death was aspiration pneumonia related to chronic alcohol use.
According to prosecutors, medical professionals also found that the teenager had an abnormally fatty liver for someone her age. Investigators say doctors believed the condition could indicate extensive and prolonged alcohol consumption.
The medical findings became an important factor in the criminal investigation.
Authorities noted that while the manner of death was classified as natural due to the voluntary nature of alcohol consumption, investigators believed the circumstances surrounding the drinking warranted criminal charges.
Prosecutors Allege Isolation From School Activities
Investigators also alleged that Gretchen Ryan removed Grace from her public high school and enrolled her in online education during the previous year.
According to court documents, Grace had completed only one online semester of ninth grade and had not participated in activities outside the home for several months before her death.
Prosecutors argue that the isolation may have contributed to the circumstances surrounding the case.
When questioned by investigators about allowing her daughter to drink alcohol, Ryan allegedly stated, “If I was drunk, I probably might have let her.”
Court Proceedings Continue
Gretchen Ryan was arrested at her Arvada home and charged with second-degree murder for knowingly causing her daughter’s death.
She is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond.
Court records show that Ryan is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on June 17 as prosecutors continue to pursue the case.
