President Donald Trump used this year’s Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery to honour the 13 American service members killed during the ongoing Iran war while defending his administration’s military actions and nuclear policy toward Iran.
During the ceremony on May 25, Trump laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and delivered remarks remembering the troops who lost their lives in the conflict.
“We lost 13 wonderful souls, wonderful, special people,” Trump told attendees gathered at the military cemetery just outside Washington.
Trump Says War Aimed at Stopping Nuclear Iran
While speaking at the Memorial Day event, Donald Trump repeated his position that the war is necessary to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Trump stressed that Iran “will never have a nuclear weapon” and said the sacrifices made by American troops were tied directly to that goal.
The Iran conflict reportedly began on Feb. 28 and is now approaching the three-month mark.
The president also stated that negotiations with Iran are continuing as his administration pushes for a more permanent peace agreement following a six-week ceasefire.
War Costs Continue Rising
According to reports, the conflict has already cost the United States at least $29 billion.
The war has also reportedly disrupted global energy supplies, especially oil shipments moving through the Strait of Hormuz.
Experts say the disruptions have contributed to rising gas prices, inflation, and economic pressure worldwide.
Public polling reportedly shows that many Americans oppose the ongoing war despite the administration’s arguments about national security.
Peace Negotiations Still Underway
Trump suggested over the weekend that a peace agreement with Iran could be close, although he later said negotiators should not rush the process.
On social media, the president wrote that negotiations with Iran were “proceeding nicely” but warned that any agreement would need to fully meet U.S. expectations.
One major issue in the negotiations reportedly remains Iran’s nuclear program.
The administration is also working toward reopening full shipping access through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply.
Top Officials Attend Arlington Ceremony
Several senior administration and military officials joined Trump during the Memorial Day observance.
Those attending included JD Vance, Pete Hegseth, and Dan Caine.
Family members of fallen service members were also present during the emotional ceremony.
Memorial Day Observance Held Amid Global Tensions
This year’s Memorial Day ceremony carried added emotional and political significance because of the ongoing military conflict and growing public debate surrounding the war.
Memorial Day in the United States is traditionally dedicated to remembering military personnel who died while serving the country.
At Arlington National Cemetery, presidents traditionally participate in wreath-laying ceremonies and tributes to fallen soldiers.
