Donald Trump sparked criticism after saying Americans’ financial struggles are “not even a little bit” motivating his efforts to negotiate a deal related to the ongoing war with Iran.
Trump made the remarks on Tuesday while speaking to reporters before departing the White House for an important trip to China.
Trump Focused Only on Iran’s Nuclear Program
When asked whether rising inflation and economic pressure on Americans were influencing his approach to the conflict with Iran, Trump dismissed the idea completely.
“Not even a little bit,” Trump said.
“The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran, they can’t have a nuclear weapon,” he continued. “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing: we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon.”
Trump also argued that Americans understand the seriousness of the issue, saying Iran obtaining nuclear weapons would create danger for the entire world.
Inflation and Gas Prices Continue Rising
Trump’s comments came on the same day a new economic report showed inflation rose for the second consecutive month, reaching its highest level in three years. According to the report, prices increased 3.8% in April compared to the previous year.
At the same time, Americans are continuing to face high gas prices linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Data from AAA showed the national average price for a gallon of gas had climbed to $4.50 as of Tuesday, more than $1.50 higher than before the war began earlier this year.
Trump Suggests Gas Tax Holiday
Earlier this week, Trump floated the idea of temporarily suspending the federal gas tax to help ease financial pressure on consumers dealing with rising fuel costs.
Despite concerns about inflation and living expenses, Trump defended his economic policies during the exchange with reporters.
“Our policies are working incredibly,” he said when asked about his previous campaign promises to lower inflation.
Trump also predicted that oil prices would fall significantly once the conflict with Iran ends.
“When it’s over, you’re going to have a massive drop in the price of oil,” he told reporters.
Democrats Criticize Trump’s Remarks
Democrats quickly reacted to Trump’s comments about Americans’ financial struggles. Chuck Schumer reposted a video of Trump’s remarks on social media and wrote, “We can tell.”
Critics argued that Trump appeared disconnected from the economic challenges many Americans are currently facing, especially rising grocery and fuel costs.
Poll Shows Economic Concerns Growing
A recent ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll found that many Americans remain unhappy with the current state of the economy.
According to the survey:
- 65% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy
- 76% disapprove of how he is handling the cost of living
- 72% disapprove of his handling of inflation
Several people interviewed by ABC News also described feeling overwhelmed by increasing gas prices and everyday expenses as the conflict with Iran continues.
Debate Over Economy and Foreign Policy Continues
Trump’s comments have added to the growing national debate over balancing foreign policy priorities with economic concerns at home.
While the president continues focusing heavily on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, many Americans remain concerned about inflation, fuel prices, and the overall cost of living.
As the conflict enters its 11th week, economic pressure on households is expected to remain a major political issue in the months ahead.
