Trump says America will extend the ceasefire with Iran at Pakistan's request

Tensions in the Middle East remain high, but a major development has brought temporary relief. The United States has decided to extend its ceasefire with Iran, delaying the risk of immediate conflict while diplomatic efforts continue.

Ceasefire Extended Amid Rising Tensions

Donald Trump announced that the United States would extend its ceasefire with Iran indefinitely, just one day before it was set to expire. The move has helped calm fears of renewed fighting, which had already affected global markets, especially energy prices.

However, Iran has not yet officially responded to the extension. Both sides have warned that if no agreement is reached, conflict could resume.

Peace Talks Face Uncertainty

Pakistan had planned to host a second round of negotiations between the two countries. Shehbaz Sharif played a key role in trying to bring both sides back to the table.

Despite these efforts, the talks have been delayed. JD Vance postponed his planned visit to Islamabad after Iran rejected attempts to restart discussions.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, said there is “no final decision” on returning to talks, pointing to what Iran sees as unacceptable actions by the U.S., including a blockade of its ports.

Blockade Remains a Major Issue

The United States has continued its blockade despite extending the ceasefire. This has become a key disagreement between the two countries.

Iran insists that ending the blockade is necessary before any serious talks can continue. Amir Saeid Iravani said that once the blockade ends, negotiations could move forward.

The blockade was introduced to pressure Iran over its control of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route through which around 20% of the world’s oil and gas passes.

Global Impact of the Conflict

The tensions have already affected global energy markets. Oil prices have risen sharply, with Brent crude reaching close to $95 per barrel, a significant increase since the conflict began.

Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz has played a major role in this increase, as disruptions in this region can impact global supply.

Military Activity Continues

Even during the ceasefire, military actions have not fully stopped. The U.S. recently boarded a sanctioned oil tanker, reinforcing its efforts to control oil trade linked to Iran.

At the same time, Iran has strongly criticised such actions, calling them violations of the ceasefire.

Officials on both sides continue to use strong language. U.S. leaders have warned of heavy bombing if talks fail, while Iranian officials have hinted at new military capabilities and threats to regional oil production.

Regional Tensions Still High

The situation is not limited to the U.S. and Iran. In Lebanon, the Iran-backed group Hezbollah has resumed attacks on Israeli forces, claiming it is responding to violations of a separate truce.

Israel has responded with strikes and continues to maintain a security zone in southern Lebanon. At the same time, diplomatic talks between Israel and Lebanon are expected to resume soon in Washington.

Rising Casualties from the Conflict

The human cost of the conflict has been severe. Since the war began:

  • Over 3,300 people have been killed in Iran
  • 23 people have died in Israel
  • More than a dozen deaths have been reported in Gulf Arab states
  • 15 Israeli soldiers and 13 U.S. service members have also been killed

In Lebanon alone, fighting has resulted in over 2,290 deaths.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue

Despite the tension, global leaders are still pushing for peace. António Guterres called the ceasefire extension an important step that creates space for diplomacy and confidence-building.

Pakistan remains hopeful that both sides will return to negotiations, with increased security already in place in Islamabad for possible future talks.
