President Donald Trump shared updates on Saturday about the ongoing renovations at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, showcasing progress just weeks ahead of America’s 250th anniversary. The pool is expected to be completed by July Fourth, with Trump highlighting upgraded materials and improvements aimed at longevity and aesthetic quality.
Trump Shares Progress Photos of Reflecting Pool Renovations
In a Truth Social post, Trump posted images of the Reflecting Pool with the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument visible at each end. The photos captured clear blue skies reflected in the water.
“Looking really good! Should be completed before the Fourth of July, our target date,” Trump wrote.
The president emphasized that the project includes:
- Substantially upgraded construction materials
- Enhanced surface qualities
- Sandblasted granite and exterior stone walkways
- A higher-quality sealer for more reflectivity
“I’ve made this a much larger job than originally contemplated for purposes of Beauty, and a much longer life,” Trump added.
Controversy Over Industrial-Grade “American Flag Blue”
The renovation has drawn criticism over the pool’s resurfacing material and its vivid blue coloration, which critics say could alter the historic character of the site.
The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) filed a lawsuit against the National Park Service (NPS) to halt the project. The nonprofit claims:
“The vivid blue coating will fundamentally alter the visual and experiential character of the pool and the broader Lincoln Memorial Grounds landscape… The new coloration will cause the pool to resemble a large swimming pool rather than the reflective civic landscape it was designed to be.”
TCLF president Charles A. Birnbaum emphasized concerns about compliance with historic preservation law, noting that the Reflecting Pool is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. He stated that any project altering key character-defining features should undergo review under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.
Trump Defends Renovation Progress and Materials
In a separate Truth Social post, Trump reiterated his focus on using industrial-strength materials for a longer-lasting repair and said the project is ahead of schedule.
The comments came after a New York Times article raised concerns about:
- Bubbles, small holes, and color inconsistencies in the partially refinished surface
- Only 35% of the pool surface being fully coated as of Sunday
- Crucial joints not yet replaced
Interior Department spokesperson Katie Martin responded, noting that sections of the basin are in various stages of repair, but that the final product will be uniform.
White House Statement
White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told Fox News Digital:
“The restoration effort will be completed ahead of America’s 250th celebrations… Thanks to President Trump, the Reflecting Pool will be restored to all its glory!”
