President Donald Trump is attending his second golf tournament in as many weeks, both hosted at courses he owns. After spending time at his Doral course in South Florida for the PGA Tour, Trump traveled to Trump National Golf Course Washington D.C. in Sterling, Virginia, to watch LIV golfers in action.
Trump’s Visit and Interaction with LIV Golf Figures
Upon arrival, Trump made his way to a presidential suite via golf cart, where his son, Eric Trump, was seated with a representative from the Public Investment Fund, which plays a key role in LIV Golf’s backing. Trump greeted the individual with a handshake before settling in to watch the tournament.
Trump’s Views on LIV and PGA Tour Merger
Amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding LIV Golf, especially after the league announced it would no longer be funded by the Saudi government after this season, Trump shared his belief that the LIV golfers returning to the PGA Tour would ultimately be beneficial for the sport.
“I do believe that all of the golfers should be playing against each other,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office last Thursday. “They have great players on LIV, but it’s almost like people want to see that. That’s why the Masters was so good, because you saw everybody together.”
Trump expressed his desire for more competitive matchups, citing the potential excitement of seeing top players like Rory McIlroy face off against Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm against Scottie Scheffler. He emphasized that the PGA Tour needs the best players to thrive, suggesting that a return to mutual participation would only elevate the sport.
LIV Events at Trump Courses
Trump has attended previous LIV events held at his golf courses, and this marks the second LIV tournament at a Trump-owned course this year. In August, another LIV event will be held at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
Trump’s Doral course also hosted the Cadillac Championship last week, marking the first PGA Tour event at one of his properties in a decade. Trump was also present at the Ryder Cup last year at Bethpage Black in New York.
