Former presidential candidate and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced Friday that she will step down from her role effective June 30, following her husband’s diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer.
Reason for Resignation
In a letter to President Donald Trump, Gabbard explained that her husband, Abraham, faces significant health challenges in the coming weeks and months. “At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle,” she said. “I cannot in good conscience ask him to face this fight alone while I continue in this demanding and time-consuming position.”
Gabbard emphasized that Abraham has been her “rock” during their 11-year marriage, which has included deployments, political campaigns, and her work in the Trump administration. She added that she is “fully committed to ensuring a smooth and thorough transition over the coming weeks.”
Transition Plans
President Trump praised Gabbard on Truth Social, saying she “has done an incredible job.” Her deputy, Aaron Lukas, will serve as acting director in the interim.
Gabbard’s resignation is the fourth Cabinet departure this year, following Attorney General Pam Bondi, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.
Impact on Intelligence Community
Her departure will create a vacancy in a critical role overseeing the nation’s intelligence community, a position particularly important amid ongoing tensions and the war with Iran.
