A tragic shooting in Missouri has left two sheriff’s deputies dead after a suspect allegedly opened fire during a traffic stop and later during a lengthy manhunt.

Authorities said the violence unfolded over several hours and ended in a gunfight in a wooded area. The incident has shocked the local community and raised fresh concerns about officer safety.

Deputy Killed During Traffic Stop

The violence began just before 4 p.m. on Monday near Highlandville in Christian County, Missouri. According to Christian County Sheriff Brad Cole, a 911 caller reported seeing a deputy lying on the roadway.

By 4:05 p.m., responding officers found Deputy Gabriel Ramirez, 30, fatally shot at the scene. Authorities believe he was shot during a traffic stop involving 45-year-old suspect Richard Bird. Officials have not yet confirmed why the traffic stop was initiated.

Deputy Ramirez had joined the Christian County Sheriff’s Office in March 2025. Before that, he had served in the U.S. Army.

Suspect Identified and Manhunt Begins

Soon after the shooting, deputies identified a possible suspect vehicle. Officers traced it to an address near Galena in Stone County, which is next to Christian County.

Richard Bird was identified through criminal records, and a booking photo from a recent arrest in Stone County was shared with law enforcement teams searching for him.

His vehicle was later found abandoned near a highway in Reed Springs. Authorities then began an extensive search operation that lasted nearly nine hours.

Gunfire Erupts in Wooded Area

Around 11:30 p.m., a Missouri Highway Patrol helicopter detected a heat signal in a wooded area. Officers moved in, and that is when, according to Sheriff Cole, the suspect allegedly opened fire again.

During the exchange of gunfire:

  • Webster County Deputy Austin McCall was shot.
  • Christian County Deputy Josh Wahl was also wounded.
  • Both officers initially suffered life-threatening injuries.

Because of the active gunfire, other officers could not immediately reach the wounded deputies.

Second Deputy Killed During Rescue Attempt

Deputy Michael Hislope, 40, was among those who tried to rescue the injured officers. During the rescue attempt, he was fatally shot.

Sheriff Cole said Hislope was struck while trying to reach and help his fellow deputies.

Both Hislope and Ramirez had previously served in the U.S. Army before joining the sheriff’s office. Hislope had been with the department since October 2019.

Sheriff Cole described both men as brave officers who put others’ safety before their own.

Suspect Killed in Final Gunfight

Law enforcement agencies used an armored vehicle to approach the suspect, who continued firing at officers.

Authorities said multiple officers returned fire. The gunfight ended when the suspect was shot and killed.

The two injured deputies were eventually rescued and taken to hospital. As of Tuesday, both were reported to be in stable condition.

Community in Shock

The back-to-back deaths of two deputies have deeply affected Christian County and nearby communities. Sheriff Cole praised the fallen officers for their service and sacrifice, both in the military and in law enforcement.

“These men answered the call to serve,” he said, adding that their courage and dedication would never be forgotten.

Investigation Ongoing

Officials are still investigating what led to the initial traffic stop and the motive behind the shooting. Authorities have not yet released further details about the suspect’s background or possible reasons for the attack.

The incident remains under active investigation as the community mourns the loss of two officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
