Cruise vacations are usually seen as relaxing getaways filled with entertainment, food, and ocean views. However, a recent incident aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship has once again brought attention to onboard violence and passenger behavior.
Two women from Alabama ended up in federal court after a physical fight reportedly started over access to a VIP line at guest services while the ship was at sea.
Fight Breaks Out on Carnival Cruise Ship
According to reports, the altercation happened aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship traveling from Gulf Coast departure ports.
The disagreement reportedly began in a VIP line at Guest Services. Authorities said the two women argued over who was allowed to stand in the special service line.
The argument later became physical, leading to both passengers being charged with simple assault.
Because the incident happened at sea and involved U.S. citizens, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) took over the investigation.
Why the FBI Handles Cruise Ship Crimes
Many travelers often wonder who investigates crimes that happen on cruise ships in international waters.
In cases involving serious incidents or violent crimes on cruise ships connected to U.S. citizens, the FBI usually becomes the lead investigative agency.
This is common for crimes that occur while ships are sailing outside regular state jurisdiction.
The two women later appeared in Federal Court in Mobile, Alabama.
Women Pleaded Guilty in Federal Court
During their court appearance, both women pleaded guilty to simple assault charges.
However, the court decided to withhold formal adjudication.
Instead, officials placed both women under a three-month period of good behavior.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Mobile:
- The women must avoid committing new crimes
- They must avoid contact with each other
- If they follow those conditions, the charges could eventually be dropped
Carnival Cruise Line Faces Ongoing Attention Over Fights
Carnival Cruise Line has frequently appeared in news reports involving passenger altercations and onboard disturbances.
Reports suggest the company has recorded one of the highest numbers of onboard fights and assault-related incidents among major cruise lines operating from U.S. ports.
Industry observers believe several factors contribute to these situations, including:
- Alcohol consumption
- Short party-focused cruise itineraries
- Large crowds onboard
- Long service lines and crowded spaces
These conditions can sometimes create tense situations between passengers.
Cruise Industry Safety Still Under Focus
Despite the negative headlines, many travelers continue to enjoy cruise vacations safely every year.
Carnival remains one of the largest cruise operators in the world, which may also contribute to higher overall incident numbers simply because of the large number of passengers it carries annually.
Several other major cruise lines also operate from Gulf Coast ports, including:
- Disney Cruise Line
- Norwegian Cruise Line
- Celebrity Cruises
- MSC Cruises
- Princess Cruises
Travelers can depart from ports such as Galveston, New Orleans, and Mobile depending on the cruise line and itinerary.
