A shocking attack in Ukraine’s capital has left the country shaken, not just because of the violence but also due to the actions of police officers during the incident. The tragedy in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district has raised serious questions about public safety and police responsibility during emergencies.
Deadly Shooting in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi District
The violence began when a gunman suddenly opened fire on people in the street in Kyiv. Witnesses described scenes of panic as the attacker shot victims at close range before moving toward a supermarket.
The situation became even more dangerous when the gunman entered a Velmart supermarket and took hostages. People inside were trapped as the attacker continued his rampage, creating fear across the neighbourhood.
Casualties and Victims
Officials confirmed that at least six people lost their lives in the attack. Several others were injured, including a 12-year-old boy and even a four-month-old baby who suffered from smoke inhalation after a fire broke out.
Many victims were shot outside on the street, while others were harmed inside the supermarket. Several injured people are still in hospital, with some in critical condition.
Police Response Under Criticism
The situation became more controversial after footage appeared to show police officers leaving the scene instead of helping civilians. This led to strong public anger and criticism.
Yevhen Zhukov, a senior police official, admitted that the officers had acted unprofessionally and failed to assess the situation properly. Following the backlash, he resigned from his position, taking responsibility for the incident.
Ukraine’s Interior Minister Igor Klymenko confirmed that the two officers seen in the video have been suspended. He also announced a full investigation into their actions.
Zelensky Responds to the Incident
President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly criticised the officers involved. He stated that they were present at the scene but failed to stop the attacker and instead fled.
Zelensky called their actions unacceptable and confirmed that a criminal case has been opened. Authorities are now also reviewing the officers’ past conduct.
How the Attack Unfolded
The attacker first shot multiple people outside before entering the supermarket. Inside, he took hostages and even opened fire on a police officer during the standoff.
Police negotiators tried to communicate with him for around 40 minutes, attempting to calm the situation and rescue those trapped inside. They even offered medical help for injured victims, but the attacker did not respond.
Eventually, special police forces stormed the building. The gunman was killed during the operation as he resisted arrest. After that, hostages were safely rescued.
Details About the Attacker
The suspect was reportedly a 58-year-old man believed to be from Moscow who had been living in Kyiv for several years. Some reports identified him as Dmytry Vasylchenkov, although officials have not officially confirmed his name.
Authorities said his mental condition appeared unstable. He had previously faced legal issues and had recently tried to renew his gun licence.
The weapon used in the attack was a Kel-Tec Sub-2000 semi-automatic carbine, which is legal under Ukrainian law if proper licence conditions are met.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigators are now looking into how the attacker was able to legally own the weapon and obtain necessary documents. They are also examining multiple possible motives behind the attack.
Despite the tragedy, officials have said there are no plans to conduct mass checks on gun owners. Ukraine currently allows civilians to own certain firearms if they meet legal requirements.
