A husband and wife in Utah are facing serious charges after allegedly torturing and killing their 11-year-old son, Moroni Merrell. The parents, Brigham Young Merrell, 35, and Melinda Marie Merrell, 36, have been accused of child abuse homicide and child torture following a grim investigation.
Charges Filed Against Brigham and Melinda Merrell
Brigham Merrell has been charged with child abuse homicide and child torture, while his wife, Melinda, faces one count of child torture. The charges stem from the death of their son on September 21, 2025. Authorities in Tremonton Garland, Utah, began their investigation after receiving a 911 call about an unresponsive child.
The Tragic Events of September 21, 2025
Brigham Merrell called 911, claiming to have found his son hanging by a coaxial cable. He told dispatchers he was performing CPR on the boy. However, when officers arrived, they found Brigham kneeling next to the child but not performing CPR. Surveillance footage contradicted his story, showing him carrying the lifeless child upstairs after emergency responders had arrived.
Police later found evidence that Brigham had attempted to conceal physical evidence. Within a week of the boy’s death, multiple items were discarded, and rooms in the house were altered.
Medical Findings Contradict Father’s Account
The medical examiner’s findings contradicted Brigham’s explanation of the events. Ligature marks on the boy’s neck appeared to be caused by another force, not a hanging. Additionally, bruising on the boy’s back indicated severe punishment that occurred just before or during his death. Brigham allegedly claimed these bruises were caused by a belt.
History of Abuse Uncovered in Interviews with Surviving Children
Surviving children in the household reported years of extreme abuse. They described forced starvation, corporal punishment with belts, pans, and other objects, and being locked outside overnight. One child revealed that they were once forced to stay in a dog kennel.
Police found video footage supporting the children’s accounts of the abuse, showing Melinda either directly participating in the beatings or watching as Brigham carried them out.
Parents Admit to Abuse
In separate interviews with investigators, both parents reportedly admitted to the abuse. Melinda Merrell told detectives that she would check the children for bruises after a beating and adjust her methods accordingly. She claimed that she did not know it was unacceptable to leave marks on her children.
Legal Proceedings and Investigation Ongoing
Both Brigham and Melinda Merrell were arrested and booked into the Box Elder County Jail following an eight-month investigation. The surviving children have been placed in the care of welfare agencies, and the Box Elder County Attorney’s Office is handling the prosecution. The investigation remains active as authorities review additional digital evidence.
