A public clash between FBI Director Kash Patel and Senator Chris Van Hollen has escalated after the Maryland Democrat shared the results of an alcohol screening test online and challenged Patel to do the same. The exchange comes after recent allegations questioning Patel’s behaviour and drinking habits while serving as FBI director.
The heated political dispute began during a Senate hearing and later continued across social media, with both men accusing each other of dishonesty and misconduct.
Van Hollen Shares Alcohol Screening Results Online
Chris Van Hollen posted the results of his Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, commonly known as the AUDIT test, on social media after challenging Kash Patel to do the same.
The AUDIT test is a screening tool used to identify possible alcohol-related disorders and asks questions about drinking frequency, alcohol dependence, and behaviour connected to alcohol use.
Van Hollen said Patel previously agreed during a Senate hearing to take the test “side by side” with him.
While sharing his results online, the senator also accused Patel of frequently making false statements and questioned whether the FBI director would honestly release his own results.
According to Van Hollen’s shared answers, he reported drinking alcohol two to three times per week but answered “never” to all questions involving harmful alcohol-related behaviour.
Dispute Started After Atlantic Report
The controversy follows a report published by The Atlantic that allegedly raised concerns about Patel’s drinking habits and work performance.
According to the report, Patel was at times difficult to reach and allegedly consumed excessive amounts of alcohol.
Patel strongly denied the allegations and described the claims as completely false during his appearance before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee.
During the hearing, Patel also agreed to take the AUDIT test after Democrats publicly challenged him to do so.
The FBI has not yet publicly commented further regarding whether Patel plans to release his test results.
Heated Senate Hearing Turned Personal
The exchange between Van Hollen and Patel became increasingly tense during the Senate hearing focused on reviewing the FBI’s budget.
As Van Hollen raised concerns connected to The Atlantic report, Patel responded by accusing the senator of hypocrisy.
Patel criticised Van Hollen over a previous visit to El Salvador involving a mistakenly deported man and referenced photos showing margaritas on a table during the trip.
Van Hollen had earlier claimed the drinks were part of a staged photo opportunity organised by Nayib Bukele.
Patel also accused the senator of spending $7,000 on alcohol-related expenses.

The political battle later moved online after Patel shared a Federal Election Commission filing connected to Van Hollen’s Senate campaign.
The filing showed a $7,000 expense linked to catering services at Lobby Bar.
Van Hollen quickly responded online, explaining the expense covered a holiday event for campaign staff and used campaign funds rather than taxpayer money.
He also challenged Patel to release his own receipts using the phrase “#ReleaseTheTab.”
The social media fight quickly attracted attention from political commentators and members of both parties.
Democrats Push for Greater Oversight
Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee have increasingly called for closer scrutiny of Patel’s behaviour and leadership.
Lawmakers previously encouraged Patel to complete the AUDIT survey publicly as questions about his alleged conduct continued circulating.
During the hearing, Van Hollen argued that public officials cannot properly perform their duties if impaired by alcohol or other issues.
He also referenced reports alleging Patel’s staff once had to force entry into his home because of concerns involving intoxication and being hungover.
Patel has denied all allegations connected to alcohol abuse or professional misconduct.
